I first met Matt Eastvold at Dwell On Design in June of 2011.
I meet people all the time who say they are furniture designers, and after I go to check out their line I leave thinking their designs were just so-so. There might be some redeeming factors about their designs that I try to focus on. I acknowledge their strengths, and wish them all the best in their future endeavors. And all too often, that’s the last I hear about them.
Calling yourself a furniture maker is the easy part. And some people can design furniture. A handful of people can make furniture with attention to craft. But only few can make furniture with craftsmanship AND a sharp design aesthetic. Matt Eastvold can do that. His company, Eastvold Furniture is the real deal.
Every piece I have seen of Eastvold Furniture is not only beautifully crafted, but looks beautiful too. At first look the pieces seem simple – yet they have a classic quality. Pictures hardly do it justice. The true beauty is in the details. Details like the way the grain of the wood lines up on the front of the cabinets. The mitering on the corners is superb. The sheer weight of each piece, you know that it’s made with materials that are enduring. – You really have to admire a designer that doesn’t compromise on materials.
Eastvold will be sticking around a while, because he makes furniture to last and is proud to be making all items in the USA. You can trust when you get a piece from Eastvold, that it will be considered a classic years from now.
You know that saying, “they just don’t make it like they used to”? Well, Eastvold Furniture is – and better.
